Info | Meet Merle Travis Rutledge Jr., a dedicated community leader with a passion for advocating for low-income communities and championing public policy and civil rights issues. A proud graduate of Dan River High School, Merle’s life took a positive turn when he became an NAACP college scholarship recipient. Through volunteering with this esteemed organization, he transformed from a mediocre student to a high-achieving individual, earning a 3.0 cumulative GPA in his final two years of high school.
Merle’s dedication to his community extended to his athletic pursuits, playing for the Dan River High School Basketball team from 1996 to 1998 and clinching the District Tournament title in his final year. His commitment to service continued to thrive as he volunteered for the Pittsylvania County Chatham Library and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association in Danville, Virginia, where he supported fundraisers and gained valuable insights into nonprofit organizations.
After relocating to Norfolk, Virginia, to attend Norfolk State University, Merle founded the local chapter of Phi Delta Psi Fraternity Inc. and fought to establish the university’s first voting precinct following the Bush 2000 Election Victory. His volunteer work expanded to include the Children of the Sun, Urban League, and multiple wellness projects with Sentara Hospital.
Under Merle’s leadership, his fraternity spearheaded the first Youth Leadership Conference in Hampton Roads, collaborating with Children of the Sun, Urban League, and local police departments to empower young people in the community.
Tired of the status quo and recognizing the lack of formidable challengers to Louise Lucas in nearly two decades, Merle is ready to take on the challenge to flip the seat and return it to the people of District 18. With his unwavering commitment and proven leadership, Merle Rutledge is the dynamic force Virginia needs now more than ever.
