United Nations Representative. She was the sister-in-law of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the aunt of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Her father was a close political friend and colleague of former California Governor Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, and was active in the 1948 presidential election campaign of Harry S. Truman. A graduate of Georgetown University in Washington D.C., she was appointed as a United States representative to the United Nations in 1980, by President Jimmy Carter. Following her assignment at the United Nations, she served as director of Georgetown University's Italian studies program near the city of Florence, Italy. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2008, she lost her life to the disease at the age of 73.
