InfoCouncilmember Katie Valenzuela’s commitment to community is deeply rooted and driven by family.

Katie’s father, a Vietnam veteran, was dedicated to supporting other vets as both a therapist and an advocate. Her mother taught at the local community college and worked as a dental hygienist.

From an early age, Councilmember Valenzuela understood that it’s not enough to just be good—we all have the responsibility to do good for our communities and our neighbors. With her parents as inspiration and following in their example, the Councilmember continues to successfully fight to protect and improve life for all Californians.

Katie experienced profound health challenges faced by families growing up surrounded by oil fields, as her severe asthma often made it hard for her to breathe.

This commitment has only broadened and deepened over time. Now, Councilmember Valenzuela’s focus includes safe housing, the impacts of climate change, and ensuring that we improve living conditions for all families.

Councilmember Valenzuela moved to the Sacramento Region for school and fell in love with the area.

She worked in local coffee shops while finishing her degrees in community development before starting her first advocacy job.

Katie and her new husband bought a house in Oak Park, where she became active in the neighborhood association, building important community engagement tools.

But when her relationship became unsafe and she needed to relocate, Katie discovered firsthand how extremely difficult the Sacramento rental market had become. That experience was a big part of why she decided to run for office and become a champion for safe, affordable housing for all.
