InfoElected to the New York City Council in a Special Election in February of 1999, and then re-elected in landslide victories in November of 1999, November of 2001, November of 2003, November 2005 and most recently November 2009. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Nelson was presented the “Schiller Memorial Award for Americanism and Patriotism” by the Jewish War Veterans of America, of which he is a lifetime member. Mike Nelson is known for his highly involved personal approach to meeting the needs of the 48th Councilmanic District. Nelson’s prior positions as Director of Community Relations for Congressman (now U.S. Senator) Charles Schumer and Chief of Staff for State Senator Carl Kruger well acquainted him with the concerns of constituents and neighborhood organizations.

Nelson currently serves as Chairman of the New York City Council’s Waterfront Committee, and as a member of the Council’s Civil Service and Labor, Consumer Affairs, Contracts, Oversight and Investigations, Sanitation & Solid Waste Management and Transportation Committees. The Councilman also chairs the Council’s Jewish Caucus.

Encompassing several culturally diverse neighborhoods, the 48th Council District includes one of the highest populations of seniors in the City. Nelson’s community, as well as others, have benefited from his co-sponsoring of legislation to reduce rent for low-income seniors and the disabled, extend and enhance protection for all tenants and lessen taxes for low-income senior home owners.

Mike Nelson has been a strong health care advocate for his constituents. He has hosted dozens of health drives at his district office offering free mammograms, flu shots, PSA tests, blood pressure screenings and blood drives. He has allocated capital grants to hospitals for technological upgrades & the purchase of such equipment as a heart & lung machine, and a digital mammography unit. Councilman Nelson has also supported legislation that allows individuals to choose whether to enter a nursing home or to remain at home with homecare. Moreover, Councilman Nelson is a supporter of hospice care that provides accommodations for family members.

Concerned about the wide-spread problem of out of character buildings being constructed in residential neighborhoods, Councilman Nelson led the effort resulting in the “down-zoning” of Midwood as well as areas in Homecrest and Sheepshead Bay. Nelson also supported the rights of small homeowners in the Brighton Beach area who chose to reject a re-zoning plan that would make them vulnerable to predatory developers. In addition Nelson sponsored legislation enacted into law to impose strong penalties on engineers and architects who incorrectly self-certify building plans which violate Zoning and Building Codes.

Mike Nelson, a strong advocate for individuals with disabilities, made compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act a priority when he proudly allocated millions of dollars in capital funding to completely renovate the 55-year-old Kings Highway Branch Library. Project highlights included comprehensive rehabilitation of the first floor, a new children’s room on the second floor, thirty public access computers, wireless internet access, construction of ADA compliant restrooms and installation of an elevator – making all three levels of the library accessible to all.

Mike Nelson is continually working to improve the quality of life for Brooklyn residents. He has sponsored legislation calling for increased penalties for graffiti vandals and has secured Council funding for graffiti removal in his district by a specially equipped high-tech truck.

Born on November 23, 1945, Nelson attended the University of Memphis, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1972. Mike lives in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn. He was married to the late Sheila Nelson, and has one daughter, Bonnie Jill. City Councilman Mike Nelson has a life-long dedication to public service and education, with a uniquely hands-on knowledge of the needs of our community.
