A journalist for the Financial Times 1960-70. Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster 1970-74, for the City of London & Westminster South 1974-76. Appointed European Commissioner for Budget & Financial Control & Financial Institutions in 1977, served until 1985. Vice President of the European Commission 1981-85. Chairman of the Royal Institute for International Affairs (Chatham House) 1986-95, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority 1986-1991. In the 1990s he was the Chairman of Abbey National, Blue Circle and of the European Advisory Board of Lehman Brothers. His many corporate Directorships included Rio Tinto and Eurotunnel. Raised to the Peerage as Baron Tugendhat in 1993. Author of various books about big business. Brother of the Hon. Mr Justice Michael Tugendhat.
