Info | Capri Silvestri Cafaro
Capri Cafaro is an American politician of the Democratic Party in Ohio who is an Ohio state senator for the 32nd district.
Cafaro was born in Youngstown, Ohio. She is the daughter of J.J. Cafaro, who was convicted of bribery in the James Traficant case. She received a bachelor of arts degree with honors in American studies from Stanford University, and was awarded a master's degree in international relations by Georgetown University. Two years later, Cafaro founded her own public relations firm that concentrated on not-for-profit clients.
While in the master's degree program, Cafaro worked as a U.S. Senate staffer on both sides of the aisle, for US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), and US Sen. Al D'Amato (R-N.Y.). She worked in the areas of health care, education and Social Security.
Cafaro, a Roman Catholic by faith, comes from a wealthy family whose fortune derives from the shopping center business.
Cafaro won a surprise victory in the 2004 14th district Democratic Congressional primary, topping a five-candidate field, which included 2002 nominee Dale V. Blanchard, columnist Herb Hammer, U.S. Marine Charles L. Wolfe, and Ohio State Rep. Edward Jerse (who received the endorsement of the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper). Cafaro polled 54 percent of the vote, while Jerse, the second-place finisher, managed only 19 percent. In the general election, however, she lost to Republican incumbent Steven C. LaTourette by a large margin.
Cafaro ran for the Democratic nomination in the open 13th District in 2006, but lost to former State Rep. Betty Sutton, who proceeded to win the general election in November. That seat was being vacated by Rep. Sherrod Brown (D) who won election to the US Senate over incumbent Republican Mike DeWine.
On November 28, 2006 the Ohio Senate Democratic caucus appointed Cafaro to the 32nd District seat that was vacated by Marc Dann, who won election as Ohio Attorney General earlier that month.
