Born in Cambridge, Washington County, Idaho, 12/11/1906; attended public school and the University of Idaho at Moscow; graduated from the law school of the University of Idaho at Moscow in 1929; was admitted to the bar in 1929; prosecuting attorney of Washington County, Idaho, 1929; moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1936 and practiced law until 1943; during the Second World War served in the United States Air Corps 1943-1944; returned to Payette, Idaho, and practiced law 1944-1950; also interested in farming and livestock raising in Idaho
ID State Senate 1948-1950
U.S. Senator (R-ID) 1951-1957; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1956. Strong supporter of Sen. Joseph McCarthy and led the opposition to his censure. Welker also was a leading opponent of recognizing Communist China.
Engaged in the practice of law and farming
Died 10/30/1957. Welker had entered the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda MD on 10/16/1957; had brain surgery the following day and a later brain surgery to remove a tumor. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, Va. Survived by his widow Gladys and daughter Nancy.
