Info | A life-long resident of Illinois’ new 8th Congressional District, Rick Veenstra will be a strong voice in Washington for the residents and communities of Chicago’s western and northwestern suburbs.
A prosecutor for most of his career, Rick serves as a deputy chief in the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the second largest office of its kind in the state. Over the years, Rick handled criminal cases ranging from simple traffic offenses to violent felonies. Presently responsible for external relations and legislative affairs, Rick works with legislators of both political parties to draft and pass legislation aimed at protecting the public and improving the quality of life in the community.
Rick has also represented the State’s Attorney on numerous task forces and committees including the Regional Office of Education’s Bullying Task Force, the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), the DuPage Sex Offender Management Board, and the DuPage County Juvenile Justice Council. As “community prosecutor,” Rick has presented on various topics including identity theft, elder abuse, Internet safety, and bullying and serves as a liaison between the State’s Attorney’s Office and the communities it serves. Rick’s experience building relationships between the public and private sectors dates back to his time in college and in law school when he worked for the late Congressman Henry Hyde and later for the Illinois General Assembly focusing on constituent service and local policy issues.
Rick learned the importance of giving back to his community by the example set by both of his parents. He is presently a member of the Village of Addison’s Plan Commission after previously serving as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Citizen’s Advisory Commission for a combined total of nearly 10 years. From 2005-2007, he served as a Trustee of Addison Township and was twice elected moderator of the annual town meeting. He is a member of St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Addison.
Rick is a graduate of DePaul University’s College of Law. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Political Science with high honors from Elmhurst College – where was twice elected President of the Student Government Association and where he now serves as Vice President of the Alumni Association. He is a member of the DuPage Bar Association and the Federalist Society for Law & Public Policy.
