Former State Senator Thomas F. Schweigert, 83, of Petoskey, died on July 9, 2001, at Northern Michigan Hospital.
Mr. Schweigert was born on Sept. 29, 1917, in Detroit. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1939 with a degree in forestry.
On July 3, 1943, he married Margaret "Peggy" Chapman in Detroit.
Mr. Schweigert served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946.
After serving as a forester in the U.S. Forest Service, Mr. Schweigert founded a private forest management business in Petoskey in 1948, pioneering in the field of consulting forestry. During this time, he served in many capacities in local government, including three terms on the Emmet County Board of Supervisors.
