Info | Effective August 5, 2002, Jim was appointed Florida Secretary of State by Gov. Jeb Bush. The appointment ran until January 7, 2003, when the Department became an agency under the governor. He was recently appointed to the Florida State University Board of Regents.
Jim Smith has held many positions in Florida Government. Previous positions include, Secretary of State, State of Florida; Chief of Staff, Office of the Governor, Attorney General, State of Florida; member - Board of Regents, State University System; Assistant to the Governor, State of Florida; Deputy Secretary of State and Executive Assistant, Department of State, State of Florida. He presently is a partner with the law firm of Smith, Ballard, Bradshaw and Logan, P.A. in Tallahassee.
Prestigious awards include: FSU's ODK "Grads Made Good" Award, Honorary Degree of Humane Letters from FSU, Honorary Doctor of Law Degree, Stetson University; Stetson University Distinguished Alumni Award; the U.S. Dept. of Justice Award, Effectiveness in Drug Enforcement; Friend of Education Award, Florida Teaching Profession-National Education Association; President's Award, Florida Education Association; Furtherance of Justice Award, Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association; and the Meritorius Service Award, Florida Silver-Haired Legislature.
Jim was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army, 1962, and served two years active duty. He was honorably discharged from the reserve with the rank of captain. Jim has also served on many professional and civic organizations including Past President of FSU's National Alumni Association.
