InfoA product of the Boston Public Schools in the 70’s and 80’s, Tomás grew up during a tumultuous time in our city’s history. As a young Latino living in a poor neighborhood, he was forced to overcome many hurdles in his life. In the process, he developed an appreciation for the value of a good education.

This appreciation motivated Tomás to enroll at Roxbury Community College at the age of 23. Tomas was a leader on campus from the start, organizing numerous activities for a student body that represented all races and backgrounds. As a result of his student leadership and academic success Tomás earned a scholarship to Boston College where he graduated in 1997.

Tomás’ life experiences led to his early career as a community organizer. He ran successful voter registration efforts in communities of color in Boston. He helped young adults find direction and purpose through volunteerism as a recruitment manager for City Year Boston. As Director of the Frisoli Youth Center in East Cambridge, he created structured after-school enrichment programs for neighborhood children. At the Center for Sport in Society he engaged young people in recreational activities as an alternative to violence and video games.

In 2002, Tomás joined the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services as the Citywide Latino Liaison. This role afforded him the opportunity to help people throughout the city solve their problems on everyday issues such as getting sidewalks and streets repaired, advocating for education, and finding housing for families displaced by tragedies such as fires. This role gave Tomás a unique understanding of the challenges faced by the people of Boston.

As Chief of Staff of the City’s Elderly Commission, Tomás became one of the highest ranking Latinos in the Mayor’s administration. In this capacity, he worked to improve access to city services for Boston’s seniors. More recently, Tomás served as Director of Community Outreach for Boston University’s Medical Campus, providing him with a greater understanding of how to effectively work with Boston’s many universities and their neighbors.

Boston native, Tomás was born in South Boston and moved to Jamaica Plain in 1973, before moving to Dorchester as a teenager. Tomás is married to Daila Davila-Gonzalez, a former Boston Public School teacher and Preschool Director. She is currently a Disabilities Specialist for South Side Head Start. Tomás and Daila live in Hyde Park with their two children, Taina and Tomás, and they are members of La Congregación de Leon de Juda.
