Info | Tomas Regalado was initially elected in a citywide special election in September of 1996, and is currently the longest serving sitting Miami commissioner. Regalado was re-elected as District 4 commissioner in 1999, 2003, and 2007. In 2007, Regalado received 94% of all votes casted in District 4, the highest ever for a candidate in the City of Miami’s history. Commissioner Regalado has the only perfect record of attendance in Miami’s city commission history, and has never missed a regular or special commission meeting. Additionally, he has a perfect record with regard to his office budget. Over the course of the last thirteen years, he has never exceeded his office budget. During one fiscal year, this allowed him to utilize his rollover budget surplus by providing $80,000 dollars to the Community Development Department in order to address a deficit and continue the citywide homebound meals service for senior citizens. Additionally, he allocated $10,000 to the Miami Police Department for overtime in order to fight prostitution in the Flagami area (District 4).
During his years in office, Regalado has been called “The People’s Commissioner” for championing the people’s causes. Regalado championed the Living Wage Ordinance in the City of Miami, which was approved after two years of leading the discussion at the city commission level. Regalado also championed the conversion of part-time employees (identified as those who were working thirty-nine hours without benefits for fifteen years or more) to full-time employment status with benefits.
Regalado spearheaded the creation the Community Relations Board in the City of Miami and remains a vigilant supporter of the board and its mission. As the city’s representative on the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, he created the Street Feeding program for the homeless population in Downtown. Regalado opposed the “Mega Plan”, the Mercy Hospital condo rezoning, the rezoning of the Miami Herald building for high rise construction on the bay, the large Home Depot store in Coconut Grove, and the proposed condo towers next to the historic Freedom Tower. He has supported intelligent growth.
Tomas Regalado has been a popular radio and television anchor for forty years. He is the only South Florida journalist to have been a member of the White House Press Corps during the administrations of President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton. His wife of thirty-seven years, Raquel Regalado, a popular radio anchor passed away in February of 2008. He has three children; Tomas Jr., a television anchor; Rachel, an attorney; and Jose, a full time student at FIU.
