Info | I was born on September 30, 1948, in Lewiston, Maine, and became a resident of Barre City in 1970. While growing up in Maine, I attended private schools, including Saint Dominic High School, and in 1966 I came to Vermont to attend Norwich University. At Norwich, I was a member of the mens ice hockey team and am among the school’s all-time top 10 scorers. After graduating from Norwich University in 1970, I moved to Barre to teach Social Studies and coach the boys ice hockey and football teams at Spaulding High School. While teaching at Spaulding, I completed my Master’s in Education degree at Norwich, which I received in 1974. In 1980, I coached the Spaulding ice hockey team to the Division 1 state championship, the school’s first title in nearly 20 years.
I was first elected to represent the citizens of Barre City in the Vermont Legislature in 1980 when I defeated Lucile Molinanri, a 16-year incumbent. I was re-elected to the House four consecutive terms, serving four years as Majority Leader. In 1988, I left the Vermont House to make an ultimately unsuccessful bid to represent all Vermonters in Washington as Vermont’s sole Congressional member.
Following the 1988 election, I worked as the Manager of government and community relations for Green Mountain Power Corporation and then as a Vermont Protection & Advocacy public advocate lobbying for patients at the Vermont State Hospital and inmates at the Chittenden Correctional Facility in South Burlington. Most recently, I volunteered as the Interim Director of the Turning Point Center of Central Vermont.
Currently, I am representing the residents of Barre City’s District 1 on the Barre City Counsel and will begin serving as the legislative representative in the Vermont Legislature from the Washington County 3-1 Representative District on January 7, 2009.
I am married to Lesley (McLeod) Poirier, formally of Northfield. Lesley and I have two grown children, Aimee and Jeffrey, and an adorable grandson, Charlie.
