Info | Salma Ataullahjan immigrated to Canada from Pakistan 28 years ago. She settled in Toronto where she has been working in real estate for 18 years, while being actively involved in the social and political affairs of her community.
Salma was born in a family where politics has been part and parcel of daily life for over a century. Her paternal grandfather was part of the Freedom Movement of India and members of her extended family have been involved in the struggle for democracy, human rights and more specifically, advocating women’s rights in Pakistan.
She has been active in the Pakistani Canadian Professionals and Academics, where she served on the Executive and was instrumental in organising a fund raiser for the Credit Valley Hospital.
Salma founded the Parents Council at David Lewis P.S. and was involved with them for 16 years. As Chairperson of the Parent Council for 10 of those years, she was responsible for organizing many community events working closely with the Toronto District School Board.
As a member of the South Asian Regional Council executive, she helped to organize events to bring the Pakistani and Indian communities together in an attempt to promote more open dialogue.
Salma has played a pivotal role in the Canadian Pushtun Cultural Association, an organization which promotes the values of non-violence. She is currently the Vice President after serving as President for two years.
Ms. Ataullahjan sits on the executive of the Toronto chapter of the Citizens Foundation, a charity dedicated to building not-for-profit schools in the poorest districts of Pakistan, areas that would otherwise have no access at all to educational facilities.
When not involved with social or political causes, Salma paints in watercolour. Her work has been featured across the city in the “Open Doors Exhibition” at the Civic Centre and Roy Thompson Hall. She received the “Best Contemporary Work” award at an exhibition in the Streetsville Art Gallery with thirty three artists from South Asia.
Salma Ataullahjan has been married to Saleem for 28 years and they have two daughters; Anushka, a 23 year old completing her masters in London, England and Shaanzeh, 16, in grade 11 at Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute.
