Info | At a time when politicians in Washington govern by crisis, Joe Bock is uniquely qualified to help end the dysfunction and put Congress back to work to help the middle class.
Throughout his career as a humanitarian aid worker, Joe was on the leadership team at the American Refugee Committee as well as a Country Representative for Catholic Relief Services. Through those roles Joe lived in Asia and the Middle East, as well as overseeing programs in Africa, Asia and the Balkans. Joe has supervised or supported country programs designed to re-build infrastructure and local businesses and support conflict resolution efforts.
Joe is a teaching professor at Notre Dame’s Eck Institute for Global Health, where he trains students in humanitarian ethics and disaster response. In 2010, he took a leave in order to lead the American Refugee Committee’s efforts in Haiti after the devastating earthquake there.
Joe supported the creation of a lending institution for victims of blood diamonds violence in Sierra Leone. He is a consultant to the World Bank on conflict resolution designed to enable economic development.
Joe earned his Master’s in Social Work from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Ph.D. from American University’s School of International Service. After graduation, Joe ran for office and served in the Missouri legislature for six years. Before earning his degrees, Joe worked as a hired-hand on a farm and was a professional firefighter.
Joe and his wife Sue, a kindergarten teacher, live on the St. Joseph River in South Bend, Indiana. Joe is a parishioner of St. Therese of Little Flower Catholic Church. Sue is a member of Kern Road Mennonite Church. They are volunteers at Our Lady of the Road, where they serve meals to the homeless and spend the night in cold weather to help care for the less fortunate. Joe is a member of the Anti- Violence Commission in South Bend as well as the Safety and Security Committee of the South Bend Community School Corporation.
