InfoNorwood James "Jim" Patterson

1993-2001: Mayor, City of Fresno

Jim Patterson is the former 2-term Mayor of Fresno. He was the first strong Mayor of Fresno, serving from May 11, 1993 to January 2, 2001.

Jim is a 25-year business and broadcast executive. He has owned and operated radio stations in California and Idaho. He is a frequent talk show host on KMJ News/Talk 580 and a political analyst for KMPH-TV26.

Jim Patterson is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of California State University, Fresno, and holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. He also received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Graduate of the Political Science Department.

As Mayor of Fresno, Jim led the city through some difficult times to significant improvements. He added nearly 300 police officers to the force without raising taxes. As a result, Fresno enjoyed a near 70% reduction in crime (to a 25 year low). Jim streamlined the city’s business practices that lead to record new business development. Over a billion dollars of new construction permits were issued in his last two years in office. He initiated a dramatic $50 million airport improvement plan (now completed) that has led to improved air service. He also significantly improved the city’s local and national reputation that culminated in Fresno’s designation as an All America City in 2000.

Among his many awards, Jim Patterson is the recipient of the California Commendation Medal, Military Department of the State of California, an honor normally reserved for military personnel, for leadership and coordination of special activities with the California Air National Guard. He also received the International Chiefs of Police Vehicle Theft Award of Merit given to FPD’s HEAT team in recognition of efforts that greatly reduced Fresno’s auto theft rate.

Jim has been married to wife Sharon for 42 years. They have three children, BJ (36), Jason (29) and Lindsay (25) and are the proud grandparents of Noah James (4) and Jenna Brynn (10 months).

Jim holds a California Real Estate Broker’s License, earned a Securities Broker license (series 63 and 7, 2000 specializing in Portfolio Management, Wealth Retention and Tax Efficiency) and has had a private pilot’s license (single and multi-engine rated) since 1969.

In addition to being the Mayor of Fresno, Jim was a Board Member of the Fresno County Transportation Authority, Board Member of the Council of Fresno County Governments (COG), Board Member of the City of Fresno Pension Retirement System, Board Member of the San Joaquin River Conservancy and an Advisory Board Member of Leadership Fresno Alumni Association.

Jim is President & CEO of Jim Patterson Consulting Services, a full service government, business, broadcast, public relations and public policy consultancy.
