Description BBC Profile:
A Conservative MP has represented this seat, in its various guises, since World War II. The present incumbent, Philip Hammond inherited the seat from Sir Geoffrey Pattie in 1997.

From Sir Geoffrey's five-figure majorities in the 1970s and 80s, Mr Hammond's majority fell in 1997 to 9,875 votes. The general election of 2001 was almost a re-run of 1997, with virtually the same results recorded by all the three parties.

In 2005 the majority began to climb and Hammond achieved a five-figure lead of 12,349.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Lying in the affluent commuter belt west of London, this seat is part suburban and part rural. The borough of Runnymede is named after the historic meadows near the River Thames where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215.

There is hardly any industry in the constituency, and most of the seat's workforce is in professional, managerial or associate technical and professional positions.

The borough is also becoming a major location for knowledge-based sectors, including information technology, telecommunications and advanced business services. As a result the area has undergone a surge in high quality office development over the last few years.

The area is close to Heathrow (which provides a significant number of local jobs) with direct access to the M3 and M25 motorways.
