Description This seat is one of two in the London Borough of Camden, the other being Glenda Jackson's Hampstead and Highgate. The seat forms the bulk of the old St Pancras North constituency where John Major cut his political teeth in 1974. It includes many famous London neighbourhoods such as the legal districts of Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn on the edge of the City of London. Bloomsbury, with its academic and literary traditions is also here. The constituency houses University College and Birkbeck Colleges of London University, as well as the British Museum and British Library. There are also three major train stations - Euston, St Pancras and King's Cross, the last two within an area undergoing major redevelopment in preparation for the arrival of the new Channel Tunnel rail link in 2007. The constituency is diverse. Primrose Hill and Camden Town contain some smart housing for young, upwardly mobile professionals near the trendy Camden Lock market. Yet there are large numbers of homeless here too. The ethnic minority population is growing. Seventy-three per cent of residnets are renters, 88% are flat dwellers and it has the highest number of single occupation households in the country. Frank Dobson has been MP here since 1979. He held a number of shadow roles - environment, transport, leader of House - between 1982 and 1997. When Labour came to power he was made health secretary, a post he held for two years until he became the official Labour candidate for Mayor of London. His majority in Holborn & St Pancras has increased over the years, though it fell back somewhat in 2001 as the Liberal Democrats overtook the Conservatives to move into second place.
