| Info | Ernie Eves was sworn in as Ontario's 23rd premier on April 15, 2002. He was elected leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party on March 23, 2002 and the MPP for Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey on May 2, 2002.
Before briefly leaving politics for a position in the private sector, Eves served as Ontario's Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance from June 1995 to February 2001.
As Minister of Finance, Eves introduced the first back-to-back balanced budgets in over 50 years. He was responsible for a $63 billion provincial budget and for developing major tax statutes. He also oversaw Ontario's $20 billion SuperBuild Corporation and helped restructure the province's financial institutions.
First elected to the Ontario legislature in 1981 as the member for Parry Sound, Eves has held many positions throughout his 20-year political career. He has been the vice-chair of the Priorities, Policy and Communications Board of Cabinet and the vice-chair of the Management Board of Cabinet. He has served as the Government House Leader, Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister of Skills Development. He has also been the provincial secretary for resources development with primary responsibility for native affairs.
Active in community service, Eves became a Big Brother while in law school and became founder and secretary-treasurer of the Big Brothers Association of Parry Sound. He is also a former president of the Kinsmen Club of Parry Sound. The Kinsmen Clubs of Canada presented him with their Outstanding President's Award for his work with children who have cystic fibrosis and for his fundraising efforts.
Eves is a member of the advisory board of Vince Carter's foundation, Embassy of Hope, which helps underprivileged and disadvantaged young people. Active in the legal aid program of Ontario, Eves was the deputy director of legal aid for the District of Parry Sound, where he helped the Children's Aid Society and the native community.
He also helped establish the Justin Eves Foundation in memory of his late son and continues to act in an advisory capacity to the foundation. The foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing financial support through scholarships for learning-disabled youth who are working towards a post-secondary education.
The foundation also raises public awareness and undertakes research to help educators and institutions identify and provide appropriate supports for children with learning disabilities. Recently, the Learning Disabled Association of Ontario honoured Eves for his continuing service.
Eves was born in Windsor in 1946 and attended the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He was called to the bar in 1972 and was made a Queen's Counsel in January 1983.
He is the proud father of daughter Natalie, a student in the veterinary studies program at the University of Guelph
